New Year; New Me

Last year, I read through the Bible audibly by listening to Get In the Word with Truth's Table. This is a podcast by the women of Truth's Table. It's not a podcast, though; the two hosts read through passages from the Old and New Testaments and then end with a spirit-inspired prayer. It seems the Bible is read in chronological order, so on listening, you'll learn, for example, that a lot of Chronicles is a recap or sometimes a repeat of other books - Genesis, Kings, and Daniel.

Listening to the Word makes certain words and phrases stand out that you may have glossed over previously. This practice of waking up and listening to the word provides an excellent start to my day. I used to try to listen while walking or muddling around the kitchen, but these days, I simply sit and do nothing but listen. I am 100% present.

At the start of each year, the hosts start at the beginning of the Old Testament - Genesis. As I listened to Genesis 3 recently, I was struck by the phrasing of Adam and Eve hearing God walking in the garden. Then, the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day......Genesis 3:8.

The rest of the verse goes on to say they hid from God.

But my brain went to a place so in tune with God that I knew when He was in my space. Before Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they probably looked forward to this time of the day when they had communion and fellowship with God. There's an implication that this was a pattern they were familiar with.

And it is that familiarity with God I aspire to. As I spend time with God daily, my days are enriched. I become more attuned to his presence in the mundane. He provides the right words to say when I'm tongue-tied. There's a different outflow from me that reeks of kindness, grace, and love.

When I don't nurture this time, I may become like Adam and Eve and try to hide from God, which is pointless since He is everywhere.

I don't change because the calendar changes; I continue to be transformed as God works on me, and I fellowship with Him.

The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. Proverbs 15:3

I hope you can hear God's sound throughout the year and are transformed by spending time fellowshipping with God.
