Real Life Marriage - Funny Married Stuff

When I first saw an episode of Funny Married Stuff, the couple were in the bathroom - he on the toilet and she at the sink, talking. I laughed because it reminded me of the many times my husband and I have done the same thing. It was refreshing to see; I've been a fan ever since. Interestingly, because I live in Los Angeles, I meet a lot of creatives. I met Lony'e, the creator of this series at church when I had no idea who she was. So it's been a pleasure to see the growth of this web series.

Actress Lony’e Perrine,  created the show with her husband Peyton to promote positive relationships. Despite the facts, media representation of marriages is widely negative, with even the most successful black comedy shows such as Blackish showing the stars exploring divorce. Tired of seeing negative images of marriages in the media, the creators of this series are trying to change the narrative. Actress Lony'e Perrine and her husband of 15 years, Peyton Perrine, created the web series Funny Married Stuff as a way to promote positive, fun, and real images of marriage by combining improv humor with a touch of marital lessons.

Healthy black marriages do exist contrary to what is portrayed - see the Obamas. But outside of the Obamas, there are many more, and this is what Funny Married Stuff aims to portray. The sketch comedy has won awards at several film festivals, including Best Sketch Comedy at the Miami Web Fest and Best Web Series at the Philadelphia Independent Film Awards.

Faith is integral to Funny Married Stuff since and Lony'e and her husband are both Christians. “We are believers. We didn’t want the message to beat people over the head, but we did want it to be there,” Peyton said. “We got Christ at the center of our marriage, and we’ve been married for a while, so, our faith definitely plays into how we want to deliver our message.” Although its popularity is on the rise, the Perrines admitted to a few doubts after initially starting the series. Their faith was tested, but they stayed the course.

“After Peyton started writing the show, I got cold feet about it,” recalled Lony’e. “But, I could hear the Lord telling me, ‘You have to do this project. It’s important to get this message out there.’ So, we’re believers, and when the Lord tells you to do something, you step out on faith and do it.”

I'm glad that they stepped out on faith and produced this series.  Knowing them, it's not a stretch to see the growing success of this production. I could relate to quite a few of the episodes, and I no longer feel like a marriage unicorn. You will laugh as you nod your head in agreement.

  3. This looks like a fabulous show! Thanks for sharing. And they are right, when you are called to share something whether it’s God or the Universe pulling you in that direction, you really can’t resist...you must go forth and share. Especially when it is a positive message of love and commitment in a world filled with so much negative and brokenness. I recently started sharing about my very non-traditional marriage in my writings. It is scary, for sure, to put it out there, but I do feel a very strong pull that it is needed. And so I go forth on my mission in the face of all sorts of judgments and criticisms. But my husband and I, non-traditional through we are, have a very strong marriage that really can’t be broken by any external forces. I will definitely check out this show for inspiration.

  7. Thanks for this positive post, Nylse! The marriage relationship can be difficult, and I think the spin the media puts on it is certainly not helpful. I love to see healthy, thriving, strong relationships. It's so encouraging, and it's helpful for the next generation as well.
