Deeper Intimacy

What do you think of when you think of intimacy? When you feel an intimate connection with someone, you experience:

Connection
Knowing
Good feelings
Comfort
Safety

Usually, we feel this kind of intimacy with a significant other – our partner, our parents, close friends, and sometimes our children (when they are grown). But, is it possible to have these feelings with a sovereign divine God? I would say yes.
There was a time in my life when I felt so close to God, it was as if I could reach out and touch him. The closeness marked by intimacy was evident to me. His voice was audible to me, providing direction each step of the way, just as he said in his Word. I knew he guided me whether I spoke to my coworkers or my children. This deeper intimacy gave me confidence and peace. But then it seemed life got busier, and I became distracted by responsibilities, hobbies, even ministry. My priority changed, and I felt it; my confidence waned, and peace was fleeting. As life grew more complicated, I became less satisfied. Recognition hit me, and I started the process of refocusing my eyes on the only thing that matters – God and God alone, and the intimacy my relationship with Him brings.

  1. Nylse, intimacy with God is such a beautiful thing! Maintaining that closeness is done through a daily walk with Him as we reading His love letter to us—the Bible, and through prayer. I love that we can come boldly to the throne of grace with our praise and petitions, and that we have the privilege of holding His Word in our hands. Thank you for these reminders!

  2. You're so right about the steps we need to take to form intimacy. We wouldn't marry someone and only visit them once a week ;).

  3. Wow, Nylse. Great question. I have felt the most intimate with God when I remember to slow down, think deep, and look for holiness in God's creation. Holiness is everywhere if we just remember to look for it and holiness is a tangible, visible sign of God, who is invisible.

  4. During one of the more painful times of my life when my daughter moved to California with her husband, the first phase of the empty nest felt like a death.

But through that experience, I enjoyed such intimacy with Jesus.

You are right, it does wane. I have found that being intentional about solid time in the Word rekindles that intimacy.

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Intimacy with God often correlates to time, time, time. It's hard to find the time, but for me I HAVE to. laurensparks.net

  12. Just spending one-on-one time with God increases my intimacy with him. Worshiping, talking, communing.
