Stick By Me, I'll Stick By You

I bought this figurine maybe seven years in, because of what it represents - longevity, closeness, contentment while still dancing and liking each other as each has changed. All of this ran through my mind when I initially saw it. Then there's this reggae song that we have danced and mouthed the words to. It makes us smile as we groove to the music.

I love you darling, and that's no lie, oh-oh
Stick by me, I'll stick by you
When you cry, I cry, too, oh-oh
Stick by me, and I'll stick by you
Remember my heart and my love belong to you, oh-oh
Stick by me, I'll stick by you

Recently, I've been singing this song because 30 years later I realized that we've stuck to each other. Yes, we have.

Today is our actual anniversary. We've been up, we've been down. We've been in ruts and climbed out of them. We've had heartache and sorrow. We've pushed each other's buttons time and time again, but over time pushing buttons to hurt, irritate or manipulate is less frequent. Instead, we've learned to push each other's buttons as a means of support or letting the other know we're a constant presence. I am fascinated by long marriages because something strange happens - you either grow to like each other or you implode and suffer from resentment. We all know bitterness can sneak up on you, but good feelings also do the same. When that happens, there is contentment and peace that's enveloped in our commitment to each other. It defies words but its sweet to be living it. We are stuck with each other, and so we'll stay. I won't have it any other way.

Out of the blue, or so it seemed at the time, 16 years ago, our 4th child was born. On our 14th anniversary, I delivered baby #4 and anniversaries have never been the same. We've done a lot of sticking; we're not unstuck.

Friends may try to hurt us
Scandalize our name
No one, no one can tear us apart
You've got a place in my heart, oh yeah

I love you darling and that's no lie, oh-oh
Stick by me, I'll stick by you

There are three things that amaze me—no, four things that I don't understand: how an eagle glides through the sky, how a snake slithers on a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, how a man loves a woman. Proverbs 30:18-19

If you're in a long, healthy marriage, what's one of your favorite songs?
